For Certified Nursing Assistants

The state of Illinois requires that all Certified Nursing Assistants meet specific requirements.

The following information was taken from the Illinois Department of Public Health website.  Read the complete information by following the link above.

General CNA Requirements

All individuals placed on the Nurse Aide Registry must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Have successfully completed an approved nursing assistant training program
  2. Have documentation of successful completion of a nursing arts course (e.g., Basics in Nursing, Fundamentals of Nursing, Nursing 101, etc.) with at least 40 hours of supervised clinical experience in an accredited nurse training program. Written verification is required. Student nurses are included in this category.
  3. Have successfully completed a United States military training program that includes the content of the basic nurse assistant training program. Written verification is required. Military medics are included in this category.
  4. Have successfully completed a nursing program in a foreign country and have provided the following documentation:
    • Proof of program completion
    • Copy of a social security card
    • Visa or proof of citizenship

Foreign registered nurses not licensed in Illinois are included in this category.

All individuals meeting the above requirements also must pass the Illinois Department of Public Health’s written nursing assistant competency test, if they have completed training after January 1, 1990, and are employed in a long-term care facility. Beginning in January 1996, the written competency test became a requirement for certification.

  1. Have documentation of current registration from another state indicating requirements listed in the Code of Federal Regulations (42 CFR, Sections 483.151 and 483.152) have been met
